Artist Statement

My photography is driven by the pursuit of contrast—not only in light or colour, but in subject, situation, and the tensions embedded within everyday life. I am drawn to moments where beauty emerges from what is often considered unsightly, and where difficult truths reveal themselves within seemingly beautiful landscapes and environments.

My approach is holistic and intentional, shaped by a background in graphic design, painting, and film production. While much of my work exists within the language of street photography—where spontaneity and observation guide discovery—I also explore landscape, conceptual, and staged images, placing significant emphasis on material, process, and presentation.

My visual approach is influenced by cinematic techniques and principles of design. I often employ depth, layered focus, and compositional structures more commonly associated with film than traditional photography. Working frequently with a 50mm perspective, I aim to reflect the natural field of human vision, positioning the viewer as an observer within the scene. Foreground elements, shifting planes of focus, and environmental obstructions are used deliberately to introduce tension and spatial awareness.

My work observes a world shaped by systems of consumption, survival, and transformation. I am interested in subjects where meaning emerges through friction rather than resolution. I see beauty and grit as inseparable forces—each defining and sustaining the other in a continuous cycle. It is within this space of coexistence and tension that my images are formed.

Artist Bio

Benjamin Gibson is a Canadian award-winning, Toronto-based photographer and Creative Director whose work examines the coexistence of beauty and unease, exploring the tension between aesthetic experience and lived reality.

His practice is shaped by a multidisciplinary background. Formally trained in graphic design, Gibson began his artistic career as a self-taught painter before expanding into photography and film. He later studied Art and Design at Humber College and developed his photographic practice through both formal training and extensive self-directed experimentation.

After a period away from personal artistic production, Gibson spent several years working in commercial photography, lifestyle imagery, and film production, refining his technical craft and visual language. He continues to produce commercial video work for organizations and brands, and this experience informs his fine art practice. Drawing from cinematic methods, his photography often incorporates layered depth, controlled focus, and compositional structures that position the viewer as an active observer within the frame.

Gibson’s work engages themes of identity, environmental change, and systems of consumption, drawing from both personal experience and broader social conditions. Raised in rural Ontario with a deep connection to the natural world, he later moved to Toronto at eighteen, where the tension between urban and natural environments continues to inform his perspective.

Gibson has presented several solo exhibitions in Toronto and participated in juried group exhibitions internationally, including Portland, Oregon; Jamestown, New York; New York City, New York; and Trieste, Italy. His work has been published in Divide Magazine, Photographica, and Nauvo Arts Magazine, among others. He received Third Prize in the Modern Muse – Photo Artfolio Awards (2025), and his book Canada Series 1 was a finalist in the 2025 Urban Photo Book Awards. His work is held in the Toronto Archives and the National Gallery of Canada Archives.
